TCO calculator — frequently asked questions
What does car TCO include?
TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) is everything you spend to own and run a car over a set period: on-road price (price + tax + fees), fuel or charging, maintenance, insurance, road and registration fees, parking and tolls, minus the predicted resale value.
How is TCO different from the on-road price?
The on-road price (giá lăn bánh) is the one-off amount to first register the car. TCO adds every running cost across the years you keep it, so it is typically 1.5–2× the on-road price.
What is the registration tax (phí trước bạ) in 2026?
Per Thông tư 155/2025 (from 2026-01-01), Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (Area I) charge 12% (14M VND under 1.5B / 20M above 3B); other provinces charge 10% (600K / 1B / 2B by price band). Electric vehicles are exempt for the first 3 years.
Are electric cars cheaper than petrol?
EV energy cost is roughly 30–50% of petrol, with simpler, cheaper maintenance. But EVs usually cost more to buy, so meaningful savings appear after about 5–7 years of use. The calculator shows the exact crossover for each model.
How much does a car depreciate after 5 years?
Most cars lose 40–55% of their value after 5 years. Mainstream Japanese/Korean models hold value best; VinFast adds a manufacturer buy-back floor from year 3.
What does it cost to run a car per month?
Depending on distance and model, typically ₫3–8 million/month (fuel, maintenance, insurance, parking, tolls). Enter your real annual km in the calculator for a precise figure.
