Frequently asked questions
What does Total Cost of Ownership include?
TCO covers everything you spend to own and run a car for within a defined time period: the on-road purchase price, registration and plate fees, fuel or charging, maintenance, insurance and road fees, parking and tolls, depreciation, and the opportunity cost of the cash tied up in the car.
How accurate is the resale estimate?
Resale is predicted by a machine-learning model trained on Vietnamese used-car data and shown as a 95% confidence range — never a false-precise point. VinFast models carry an additional buy-back floor.
Why does my city change the cost?
Registration tax, plate fees, and parking vary by city tier. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City use the metro rate; other provinces use the provincial rate per Thông tư 155/2025.
Is charging an EV really cheaper than petrol?
Far less, even at home rates. The comparison is shown as an ideal estimate without traffic adjustment.
How fresh are the fee constants?
All fees follow Thông tư 155/2025 and are stamped with the last calculation date so they never silently go stale.
Do I need to create an account?
No. ViDrive is anonymous — calculate, compare, and share results without logging in or gating core features.
What does registration tax (phí trước bạ) cost for a car in Vietnam?
Registration tax (phí trước bạ) is 10–12% of the taxable price for most cars (HCMC 10%, Hanoi 12%), and 2% for electric vehicles under current incentives. It is the single largest up-front fee after the sticker price and is included in the on-road (giá lăn bánh) total.
How much does it cost to own a Toyota Vios per month?
A Toyota Vios 1.5G in Hanoi, driven 15,000 km/year over 5 years, costs roughly ₫6–7 million per month all-in (depreciation, fuel, maintenance, insurance, parking). Use the calculator with a specific car to see your exact figure.
Is an electric car actually cheaper than petrol in Vietnam?
In fuel/energy alone, yes — charging an EV typically costs 30–50% of the equivalent petrol, even at home rates. The total 5-year cost depends on purchase price and resale; the calculator compares EV, hybrid, and ICE side by side so you see the real difference.
Should I buy a car with a bank loan (trả góp)?
A loan adds interest and often compulsory insurance to the ownership cost. Compare the financed total against paying cash (including the opportunity cost of that cash) in the loan calculator — for many buyers the monthly burden is 20–40% above the car price over the term.
Do VinFast cars hold their value?
VinFast models carry a manufacturer buy-back guarantee (≈70% after 36 months), which acts as a resale floor. Without the guarantee, EV resale in Vietnam is still forming; the calculator shows both the open-market estimate and the guaranteed floor so you can see the gap.
Which is better — Japanese, Korean, or Chinese cars?
Japanese brands (Toyota, Honda, Mazda) lead on resale and service network; Koreans (Hyundai, Kia) offer strong features per dong; Chinese brands (MG, Haval, Omoda) undercut on price but have shorter local track records. Compare any two in the Compare tool using 5-year TCO, not just sticker price.
