Car registration tax in Vietnam 2026: how much and how it is calculated

Registration tax is the one-off fee you pay when you first register a car in your name. Under Thông tư 155/2025, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City charge 12% of the taxable price (close to the list price), while other provinces charge 10%. Electric vehicles get a reduced 2% rate through the end of 2026.

For example, a B-segment sedan priced at 545 million VND in Hanoi carries about 65 million VND in registration tax. This sits inside the on-road price (giá lăn bánh) alongside the plate fee, inspection fee, and first-year civil insurance. VinFast qualifies for the 2% rate, so its on-road price is noticeably lower than a petrol car in the same price bracket.

ViDrive's TCO tool calculates the registration tax automatically based on the city you pick — try it with the car you are considering.
